Eternals reveals Phastos used Batman’s plan to defeat the Justice League
In Marvel’s Eternals, Phastos was prepared for betrayal, using methods similar to Batman and his plans for rogue members of the Justice League.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel Eternal.
At Marvel Eternals, it is revealed that Phastos has similar contingency plans for his teammates like Batman done in the event that a Justice League member becomes a thug. As the film progresses, the Eternals split over the upcoming emergence, the birth of one of the MCU’s Celestials they have long served with the destruction of Earth as a cost. However, it appears that the inventor of the Eternals, Phastos, has long been preparing for eternal conflict, seemingly having the same level of preparedness (and borderline paranoia) as the Dark Knight himself.
At Marvel Eternals, Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos is one of the last Eternals to be recruited to stop the emergence. Because he had settled down with her husband and their son, the Eternals resident inventor was reluctant to join his old family, though he eventually agreed to ensure the survival of his new one. That being said, things get a lot more complicated when Richard Madden’s Ikaris decides to betray his Eternal companions, wanting to continue serving the Celestials as they always have (even if it means the end of Earth). This results in Kingo leaving before the final showdown as Sprite joins Ikaris’ side.
As a result, this leads Thena, Makkari, and Phastos to occupy Ikaris while Druig and Sersi attempt to stop the emergence. During the battle, Phastos triggers a powerful trap device that keeps Ikaris contained and unable to fly (temporarily). Phastos also mocks Ikaris as their former leader and strongest member struggles to break free, saying: “It’s been a long time since I wanted to cut your wings.” In this way, Eternals reveals that Phastos and Batman share a similarity when it comes to planning ahead, the implication being that he had built the trap in preparation for Ikaris to potentially become a thug one day, just like the plans of Batman to defeat the Justice League as seen in JLA: Tower of Babel or the animated adaptation JL: Cursed.
While Batman respected his fellow Justice League colleagues, he was also well aware that if they were to ever become corrupt or become thugs, the damage they could cause would be immeasurable. Bruce Wayne adopted a mentality of “hope for the best, prepare for the worstand had contingency plans in place to incapacitate her teammates when needed. Batman created a special red Kryptonite that would harm (but not kill) Superman, and built a virtual reality for Wonder Woman that she would face. to an opponent so uniformly matched that she would faint from exhaustion. Likewise, Phastos’ trap is a device specially designed to incapacitate Ikaris if he becomes a traitor or gets out of control. Plus, it stands to reason. that Phastos would have other devices / traps created for the rest of the Eternals as well, ready and waiting as contingencies if ever they were needed.
While Batman has been heavily criticized for his lack of confidence by fellow Leaguers (especially after his contingency plans fell into the wrong hands), Marvel’s Eternals doesn’t dive deeper into the trap designed for Ikaris and what that might suggest about everything Phastos has forged just in case. While this can certainly serve as a point of contention in the future Eternals Aftermath, it’s impossible to argue that Phastos’ preparation was the one thing that significantly slowed Ikaris down in the film’s final battle sequence.
