Payment card and mobile payment statistics – 4th quarter 2021

MACAU, Feb. 7 – According to statistics released today by the Macau Monetary Authority, the total number of personal credit and debit cards issued by Macau banks increased in the fourth quarter of 2021. credit cards and debit cards increased from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, the number and value of local mobile payment tool transactions continued to increase on a quarterly basis.

Payment cards issued

The total number of personal credit cards issued by banks in Macau stood at 1,538,947 at the end of December 2021, an increase of 1.9% from the previous quarter. The total number of debit cards issued by banks in Macau reached 1,951,643, up 1.6% from last quarter.

Credit limit granted and payment default

At the end of December 2021, the credit card credit limit granted by banks in Macau reached MOP 45.0 billion, up 0.4% compared to the end of September 2021. Credit card receivables increased amounted to MOP 2.6 billion, of which the rollover amounted to MOP 752.9 million. , representing 29.0% of credit card receivables. The delinquency rate, i.e. the ratio between amounts overdue for more than three months and credit card receivables, decreased by 0.06 percentage point to 2.3% compared to the end September 2021.

Turnover and reimbursement

For the fourth quarter of 2021, credit card revenue totaled MOP 5.3 billion, an increase of 9.8% quarter over quarter. Cash advance revenue was MOP 158.3 million, or 3.0% of total credit card revenue. The number of credit card transactions reached 8.0 million, up 13.9% from the previous quarter. Credit card repayments, in which interest and fee payments are included, rose 5.3% from the previous quarter to MOP 5.4 billion. On the other hand, the number of debit card transactions other than cash withdrawals increased by 4.7% compared to the previous quarter to reach 437.2 thousand. Debit card revenue totaled MOP 1.1 billion, an increase of 16.4% from last quarter.

The number of transactions made by local mobile payment tools increased by 5.4% compared to the previous quarter to reach 56.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2021. The value of transactions reached MOP 5.7 billion, up by 8.5% compared to the third quarter of 2021. The average amount per transaction was MOP101.1. At the end of December 2021, the number of mobile payment terminals and QR code panels stood at 90,900, up 8.1% quarter-on-quarter.
