We recently learned that Pete Davidson, a man of comedy and tragedy, was going to take a big rocket into the sky with the help of Blue Origin, the richest man in the world Jeff Bezosspace flight company. But even more recently, we learned that Davidson had pulled out of the mission.

The proposed launch date has also been pushed back. Davidson, “guest of honor,” and five paying customers were scheduled to take off on March 23; the flight will now take place on March 29. “We will be announcing the sixth crew member in the coming days,” the company added in its Tweetersuggesting that the five paying customers are still present.

Neither Davidson nor the rocket company gave a reason for Davidson’s dropout when the news broke Thursday, but he sure had a good one. Their “schedules didn’t line up” is an often-offered defense of a personal or professional rift between celebrities like Pete. “Creative differences” are another. “Exhaustion” is one more. “Voice nodes” yet another.

At least Davidson got a meal at Bezos’ mansion, as TMZ reported. Him and his girlfriend Kim Kardashian may have negotiated that deal to go into space one night in January at Bezos’ mansion in Los Angeles. In the end, perhaps the Staten Islander has had his fill of spending time in a rarefied atmosphere. From now on, it’s just burgers with the rest of the populace — he and Kardashian went to In-N-Out on Thursday, according to TMZ. If you squint, the world’s most famous woman and her boyfriend’s brave attempt to spend some undisturbed time among the hoi polloi is her own kind of special mission in suborbital space.
