Republican governors demand action from Biden to resolve border crisis | national
(The Center Square) – Governors from 11 Republican-led states gathered in the Texas border community in Mission on Wednesday to demand that President Joe Biden take immediate action to resolve the border crisis.
“President Joe Biden has caused a humanitarian crisis and chaos on our border,” Abbott said, with 10 other US governors behind him.
Along with a significant increase in illegal immigration since Biden took office, Abbott and other governors have said border communities are seeing an increase in drug and human trafficking and other crimes. because of Biden’s open border policies.
“This is a humanitarian crisis,” Abbott said.
The governor of Texas said 26 U.S. governors had agreed to a 10-point plan being turned over to the president to help ease the crisis. The plan includes the reinstatement of the “Stay in Mexico” policy which requires immigrants to return to their countries of origin until the conclusion of amnesty hearings in the United States; and complete securing the southern border with Mexico, including completing the border wall that was a priority for former President Donald Trump. A third demand is the reinstatement of Title 42 health restrictions at the border, which require immigrants to be deported if they pose a health risk, including testing positive for COVID-19.
More than 20% of migrants who have been tested at the border have tested positive for COVID-19, a governor said.
“While Joe Biden has done absolutely nothing,” Abbott said, other states have stepped up to do what should be the job of the federal government.
Abbott said the 26 Republican governors had requested a meeting with the president to discuss their concerns, but “he completely ignored us.”
Abbott was joined by Govs. Goug Ducey from Arizona, Brian Kemp from Georgia, Brad Little from Idaho, Kim Reynolds from Iowa, Greg Gianforte from Montana, Pete Ricketts from Nebraska, Mike DeWine from Ohio, Kevin Stitt from Oklahoma, Kristi Noem from South Dakota and Mark Gordon from Wyoming.
“The situation here is certainly scandalous,” Ducey said, noting the more than 15,000 refugees, mostly Haitians, who gathered under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas, last month. “It’s a tragedy and I can tell you that the border situation is just as out of control in the state of Arizona,” noting that the Yuma area in his state has seen an increase of over 100% in illegal crossings. at the borders in recent months.
“American lives are in danger,” Ducey said.
Many governors have said they have seen a significant increase in the distribution of the highly addictive narcotic fentanyl in their states due to the increase in illegal immigration.
Overall, more than 1.3 million migrants have been apprehended at the U.S. border with Mexico this year, more than the population of nine states. Several hundred thousand more escaped capture in addition to those who surrendered to the border patrol.
Even as illegal border crossings continue to increase, new guidelines issued by the Department of Homeland Security state that entering the United States illegally – in violation of immigration laws established by Congress – is no longer an offense liable to arrest.
“The fact that an individual is a revocable non-citizen should therefore not in itself be the basis for an enforcement action against him,” DHS secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a memorandum to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials last week. “We will use our discretion and focus our enforcement resources in a more targeted manner. The justice and well-being of our country demand it.
Only those who pose a threat to national security, public safety or a threat to border security should be targeted for deportation, say the new guidelines.
Governors at Wednesday’s press conference also called for Mayorkas’ resignation or dismissal.
Wednesday’s press conference came shortly after an armed student opened fire at Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas. Abbott admitted to the shooting before discussing the border crisis.
